Self-taught photographer Newsha Tavakolian began working professionally in the Iranian press at the age of 16, and at 18 she was the youngest photographer to cover the 1999 student uprising. A year later, she joined New York based agency Polaris Images. She has since covered regional conflicts, natural disasters and has made social documentary stories. Her work is published in international magazines, newspapers, art exhibitions and museums, including at the Victoria & Albert Museum, LACMA, the British Museum, and the Boston Museum of Fine Art. Now a Magnum photographer, Newsha is the fifth laureate of the Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award, and is the principle laureate of the Prince Claus Award.
